As Dawn Breaks by Kate Breslin

Amid the Great War in 1918 England, munitions worker Rosalind Graham is desperate to escape the arranged marriage being forced on her by her ruthless guardian and instead follow her own course. When the Chilwell factory explodes, killing hundreds of unidentified workers, Rose realizes the world believes she perished in the disaster. Seizing the chance to escape, she risks all and assumes a new identity, taking a supervisory position in Gretna, Scotland, as Miss Tilly Lockhart.

RAF Captain Alex Baird is returning home to Gretna on a secret mission to uncover the saboteur suspected in the Chilwell explosion, as Gretna's factory is likely next. Fearing for his family's safety, he's also haunted by guilt after failing to protect his brother. Alex is surprised to discover a young woman, Miss Lockhart, renting his boyhood room, but the two eventually bond over their mutual affection for his family--until Alex receives orders to surveil her.

Rose squirms beneath Alex's scrutiny while she struggles to gain her workers' respect. But when her deception turns to danger, she and Alex must find a way to put their painful pasts behind them and together try to safeguard the future.

My review:  This is a good book.  I thought it repeated itself too many times on Rose's situation so I found my self skipping some of that.  I found the plot to be good and the details of the canary girls was interesting.  I was surprised at who the spy was at the end of the book.  Overall I would recommend this book for a light mystery.

Deadly Target by Elizabeth Goddard

Criminal psychologist Erin Larson's dreams of a successful career come to a screeching halt when she nearly loses her own life in a boating accident on Puget Sound and then learns that her mother tried to commit suicide. She leaves her job as a criminal psychologist to care for her mother in Montana. At least she is able to produce her podcast, which focuses on solving missing persons cold cases.

Nathan Campbell's father was investigating such a case when he was shot, and now Nathan needs to enlist Erin's help to solve the case. She's good at what she does. The only problem? She's his ex.

As the two dig deeper, it becomes clear that they, too, are being targeted--and that the answers to their questions are buried deep within the past Erin struggles to explain and longs to forget.

My review: This book had so many twists and turns it kept me guessing the entire time I was reading it.  Why is one case got so many people concerned and why are people dying because of it?  It all goes back to Erin's past that she doesn't seem to remember.  I highly recommend this book to all those who like a good mystery.

Crosshairs by Patricia Bradley

Investigative Services Branch (ISB) ranger Ainsley Beaumont arrives in her hometown of Natchez, Mississippi, to investigate the murder of a three-month-pregnant teenager. While she wishes the visit was under better circumstances, she never imagined that she would become the killer's next target--nor that she'd have to work alongside an old flame.

After he almost killed a child, former FBI sniper Lincoln Steele couldn't bring himself to fire a gun, which had deadly and unforeseen consequences for his best friend. Crushed beneath a load of guilt, Linc is working at Melrose Estate as an interpretive ranger. But as danger closes in on Ainsley during her murder investigation, Linc will have to find the courage to protect her. The only question is, will it be too little, too late?

My review:  Ainsley never thought she'd see her former boyfriend, Lincoln, again.  He blew is when he sided with her father and told her she'd never make it as a singer.  She has never told anyone but her grandmother and aunt why she gave up singing.  Now she is a ranger task with finding killers. Since Lincoln was a former FBI agent he is task with helping Ainsley solve the murder of a teenage girl.  His only problem is that he can't touch a gun.  Ainsley and Lincoln have baggage they have to deal with before they can start to trust each other again.

I recommend this book to all those who like a good mystery.  There were several surprises along the way that I didn't expect.

Dead Fall by Nancy Mehl

After putting to rest the most personal case of her career, Alex Donovan is ready to move on and focus on her future at the FBI's elite Behavioral Analysis Unit. When the BAU cofounder is discovered dead in his hotel room, the FBI is called in to work on the strangest case they've ever faced. How do you find a killer who murders his victims from a distance?

When it becomes clear that the killer is targeting agents in Alex's unit, they are ordered into lockdown, sheltered in the dorms at Quantico. Alex bunks with controversial agent Kaely Quinn, and as they work together, Alex discovers in Kaely the role model she's never had--despite being warned away.

As Alex questions the type of agent she wants to become, things get personal when the brilliant killer strikes close to home. Now Alex will do anything to find the killer--even at the risk of her own life.

My review:  What an interesting book. How do you find a killer when it appears to be a suicide?  But you know the person would never commit suicide.  Alex is task with doing just that.  Every where she and her team goes, it seems the killer knows what they are doing before they do.

This is the second book in the series The Quantico Files.  It's not necessary to read the first book in the series before reading this one.  I recommend it as you learn more about Alex's background.

I recommend this book to all who like a good mystery.

A View Most Glorious by Regina Scott

Reluctant socialite Coraline Baxter longs to live a life of significance and leave her mark on the world. When her local suffragette group asks her to climb Mount Rainier to raise awareness of their cause, she jumps at the chance, even though she has absolutely no climbing experience. If she can do it, any woman can do it. And after her mother issues an ultimatum--that Cora marry the man of her mother's choosing if she is not successful--Cora must do it. But she can't do it alone.

Noted mountain guide Nathan Hardee initially refuses to help Cora, but has a change of heart when he sees what is at stake. He knows enough about the man Cora's mother has chosen to know that the headstrong young woman should have nothing to do with him, much less marry him.

Climbing Rainier will require all of Cora's fortitude and will lead her and Nathan to rediscover their faith in God and humanity. These two loners make unlikely partners in righting a wrong and may just discover that only together is the view most glorious.

My review: Cora wants to climb Mt. Rainier for two reasons.  She wants to prove that a woman can climb the mountain as good as any man.  Also, if she climbs it and reaches the summit her mother won't make her marry Cash Kincaid.  Who she can't stand.  Cora and her step father hire Nathan Hardee to be their guide.  Nathan has reservations about their ability to reach the summit. He is persuaded to be their guide as he knows Cash Kincaid and doesn't want to see her forced into marrying him.  Cora's mom was a snob and overbearing mother who thought she knew best no matter what anyone else said.  Her step father seemed to care more for Cora that her mother did and wanted only the best for her.

Riverbend Gap by Denise Hunter

When Katelyn Loveland’s car veered off a winding Appalachian Mountain road, she thought she was done for. That is until Cooper Robinson, local sheriff’s deputy, came to her rescue. And though Katie narrowly escaped her brush with death, she still fell. Hard.

She wasn’t the only one. But soon Cooper learns that the woman he’s more attracted to than any he’s ever met is his brother’s new girlfriend—and therefore unquestionably off limits. Yet, despite their best efforts, Cooper and Katie can’t seem to avoid running into each other. Or ignore the undeniable chemistry between them.

As they grow closer, Katie shares secrets from her past and the real reason she moved to their small North Carolina town. She also wins over Cooper’s welcoming and bighearted family. But they don’t know that her feelings for Cooper keep growing—all while she’s dating his brother. Soon the stakes of their emotional connection become higher than either could have imagined.

Katie stands to lose the first family she’s ever had, and a scandal could doom Cooper’s campaign for sheriff. Suddenly they find themselves on the edge of another precipice—and they’re forced to make a decision that could change their lives forever.

My review:  I've read quite a few book by Ms. Hunter.  This was not my favorite.  It seemed slow to me.  The same things keep getting mentioned a lot. I can't think of any other way to put this, the book just didn't keep my attention.

Katie is put in a hard spot when she is dating Gavin but discovers Cooper is the brother she prefers.  Gavin has been through a very difficult time and she doesn't want to hurt him or destroy the family.  So what does she do?  Cooper loves his brother and would do anything for him.  But will he be able to give up the girl he's beginning to love.

A Deep Divide by Kimberly Woodhouse

After being kidnapped as a child, heiress Emma Grace McMurray has seen firsthand the devastation that greed causes in the world, and she wants nothing to do with it. When she discovers her father has offered her up as a bargaining chip to expand his empire, she disappears into the night. Determined to stay hidden, even if it means always looking over her shoulder, she finds herself working as a Harvey Girl at the El Tovar Hotel.

When Ray Watkins arrives at the hotel on business, he is immediately captivated by the beauty of the Grand Canyon. Though his fame-seeking father aims to lure new investors to the Arizona Territory, Ray dreams of one day taking over the family business and doing good with the profits.

Ray immediately admires Emma Grace, and though an attraction begins to form, she can't let go of the deep-rooted fear that he's just like every other wealthy man she's known. When suspicious activity follows Emma Grace and Ray to the El Tovar, they are pulled into a mystery that stirs up their worst fears. And as shocking revelations come to light, they are left to question all they thought to be true.

My review:  I like the premise of the book.  Parts of it was just too slow for me.  I also didn't understand why Emma Grace didn't go by another first name if she was trying to disappear.  Changing your last name doesn't do much good if you still go by your first two names.  I did like reading about the Harvey Girls and what was required of them.  I also enjoy more of a mystery to the books I read.  If you enjoy a light read this is the book for you.
