Fragments of Fear by Carrie Stuart Parks

Evelyn McTavish’s world came crashing down with the suicide of her fiancĂ©. As she struggles to put her life back together and make a living from her art, she receives a call that her dog is about to be destroyed at the pound. Except she doesn’t own a dog. The shelter is adamant that the microchip embedded in the canine with her name and address makes it hers.
Evelyn recognizes the dog as one owned by archaeologist John Coyote because she was commissioned to draw the two of them. The simple solution is to return the dog to his owner—but she arrives only to discover John’s murdered body.
As Evelyn herself becomes a target, she crosses paths with undercover FBI agent Sawyer Price. The more he gets to know her, the more personally invested he becomes in keeping her safe. Together, they’re desperate to find the links between so many disparate pieces.
And the clock is ticking.

The minute I started reading I was hooked.  I didn't want to put it down.  There were a lot of characters thrown at you in the beginning of the book.  But once I had them figured out it was easier to follow the story line.  All the different characters were part of the mystery and were needed.  Some that I thought were just thrown in there were part of the big picture.  The only negative thing I would say about the book is the very end.  Sawyer and Tavish ran into each others arms and proclaimed their love for each other.  They were only with each other for a few times in a span of several days.  I think it would have made more sense to have them want to explore they feelings they are starting to have rather than proclaim their love.

I recommend this book to all who enjoy a good mystery.

On a Summer Tide by Suzanne Woods Fisher

Sometimes love hurts--and sometimes it can heal in the most unexpected way.

Camden Grayson loves her challenging career, but the rest of her life could use some improvement. "Moving on" is Cam's mantra. But there's a difference, her two sisters insist, between one who moves on . . . and one who keeps moving.

Cam's full-throttle life skids to a stop when her father buys a remote island off the coast of Maine. Paul Grayson has a dream to breathe new life into the island--a dream that includes reuniting his estranged daughters. Certain Dad has lost his mind, the three sisters rush to the island. To Cam's surprise, the slow pace of island life appeals to her, along with the locals--and one in particular. Seth Walker, the scruffy island schoolteacher harbors more than a few surprises.

This book is different than a lot of books I've read.  It's mainly about Cam and Seth and how they connect.  Cam doesn't want to stop in any place too long.  The only problem is that she is starting to enjoy the slow life on the island her father purchased.  Seth is there to help pay off his college loans.  But the island draws him in as well.  There is also a very big surprise in the book that throws a monkey wrench in things.

I recommend this book for those who like an easy read.

Number of Love by Roseanne M. White

Three years into the Great War, England's greatest asset is their intelligence network--field agents risking their lives to gather information, and codebreakers able to crack every German telegram. Margot De Wilde thrives in the environment of the secretive Room 40, where she spends her days deciphering intercepted messages. But when her world is turned upside down by an unexpected loss, for the first time in her life numbers aren't enough.

Drake Elton returns wounded from the field, followed by an enemy who just won't give up. He's smitten quickly by the intelligent Margot, but how can he convince a girl who lives entirely in her mind that sometimes life's answers lie in the heart?

Amid biological warfare, encrypted letters, and a German spy who wants to destroy not just them but others they love, Margot and Drake will have to work together to save themselves from the very secrets that brought them together.

This was an interesting book.  Not only did we get an incite into the workings of the intelligence workings of WWI, but also the inner workings of people with high intelligence and people with phobias.   Margot is a genius with a head for numbers.  She has no trouble figuring out the codes.  But she has trouble communicating with people in everyday things.  Drake tries to crack the shell that Margot has erected around herself.  She has vowed never to marry or have children because her dream is to be a college professor.  The only thing is that in the early 1900's women definitely did not become college professors.  Dot, Drake's sister, has trouble leaving her apartment.  With Margot's help she is able to go to work on a daily basis.

I thought it took awhile for the mystery to appear.  But once it did, I had trouble putting it down.

A Reluctant Belle by Beth White

Impoverished Southern belle Joelle Daughtry has a secret. By day she has been helping her sisters in their quest to turn the run-down family plantation into a resort hotel after the close of the Civil War. But by night and under a male pseudonym, she has been penning articles for the local paper in support of the construction of a Negro school. With the Mississippi arm of the Ku Klux Klan gaining power and prestige, Joelle knows she is playing a dangerous game.

When childhood enemy and current investor in the Daughtry house renovation Schuyler Beaumont takes over his assassinated father's candidacy for state office, Joelle finds that in order to protect her family and her home, she and Schuyler will have to put aside their longstanding personal conflict and develop a united public front. The trouble is, what do you do when animosity becomes respect--and even love--if you're already engaged to someone else?

This is the second book in the Daughtry House series.   It is not necessary to read the first book to read this one.  Although, Levi would be explained a lot better.  Joelle and Schuyler have been friends/ enemies since childhood.  One minute they are getting along and the next they are fighting.  Things haven't changed since they are adults.  Schuyler has been a playboy all his adult life.  Now that his father has been assassinated he has to grow up fast and find out who is responsible.  Joelle got so mad at Schuyler that she agreed to marry the preacher when he ask.  The only problem is she doesn't love him.

This book helps show the aftermath of the southern slaves after the Civil War.  Nobody owned them but they were still looked upon and worthless.  I have only one negative thing about the book.  I didn't feel closure at the end of the book.  Schuyler and Joelle got together.  But there were still a lot of unanswered questions.  Maybe they will be answered in book 3.  That said I would recommend the book.

Tate: The Montana Marshalls by Susan May Warren

Bodyguard Tate Marshall, has always been the family troublemaker

Maybe it’s his propensity to get entangled in other people’s problems. Now, he’s in over his head because he’s desperately in love with the woman he’s tasked to protect, the beautiful Gloria, “Glo” Jackson, daughter of US Senator and presidential hopeful Reba Jackson. A member of the country band, the Yankee Belles, Glo was targeted in a recent terrorist attack designed to deter her mother from running, and Tate will do anything to keep her safe. Even if it means letting her go.

Country music artist Glo Jackson isn’t afraid of trouble…

Stubborn and brave, Glo isn’t about to hide from threats, at least the kind that won’t cost her heart. She’s already paid a terrible price for the war on terror, and she refuses to fall for a man who might die, especially because of her. Better to keep him away, even if it means sacrificing her heart.

But when danger threatens them both, what will they sacrifice to keep each other safe?

As the presidential campaign heats up and the threats deepen, so does the attraction between Tate and Glo. But what will it cost Tate to keep her alive? And what will Glo do to keep from losing another man she loves?

This is the second book in the series.  I would recommend you read the first book in the series, Knox, before you read this.  Tate would fill in some blanks but not all of them.  Also, Knox is a great book too.

Tate has trouble accepting himself as he is.  He is always comparing himself to Knox and finds himself coming up short.  Glo is pulled in two different directions.  Her mother thinks her singing career is just a faze and she'll get through it.  She insists Glo come help her with her presidential campaign.   Glo has to figure out who she really wants to be.  This is all happening while she's caught in an explosion, gets shot, and gets caught in a mafia brawl.  All the while Tate will do anything to save her life.  He would even die for her.  That is the last thing she wants to happen.  You need to read the book to find out all that happens.  It's a great book.

We are also introduced to Ford Marshall.  He's a Navy SEAL.  We are told part of his story to take us into the next book in the series, Ford.  Can't wait to read it.

Darkwater Truth by Robin Caroll

Has the past come back to haunt the Darkwater Inn?

Adelaide Fountaine, general manager, is enthusiastically renovating parts of the Darkwater Inn. Her intentions come to a screeching halt when a skeleton is found behind a makeshift wall—an axe beside it. Something ghastly from the past has come back to haunt the Darkwater Inn.

As Adelaide works alongside owner Dimitri Pampalon and Detective Beau Savoie, the two men who have been pursuing her heart, she learns the eerie death has tentacles that reach deep into the seedy past of both the Darkwater Inn and the evil underground of New Orleans.

The past and the present collide as the stakes are upped—not only for Adelaide’s heart, but for her very life and her father’s life as well. The threats are deadly, the coils of evil are tightening around everyone involved, and they are more powerful than anyone could have ever imagined.

What a great book.  When a skeleton is found at Darkwater Inn, the suspense just keeps going.  Who is the person, when were they murdered, how, who did it.  It just keeps going. When they find out who the body was there is even more questions.  On top all that murders start happening like serial killings of years past.  Addy and her father are in danger of being the next victims.

In the midst of the murders Addy makes up her mind about who she loves.  I was going both ways about who I wanted her to end up with.  Beau and Dimitri are both great guys.  I won't spoil the book and tell you who she picked.  But the loser was very gracious.  I would love to see his story in a book sometime.  This is the third book in the Darkwater Inn series.  It's not necessary to read the first books in the series.  But it would be helpful to understand some of the background.

Cold Aim by Janice Cantore

Police Chief Tess O’Rourke’s small town is still reeling from a devastating fire when the FBI asks for help: Could she shelter a witness in a high-profile human trafficking case? Initially reluctant to put the townspeople of Rogue’s Hollow at risk, Tess is swayed after she sees Pastor Oliver Macpherson’s genuine conviction to rescue those in need, a trait in him she’s coming to love more each day.

Tess’s fledgling faith is tested when crews of workmen from out of town come in to assist with the fire cleanup and she worries that one of these strangers might shine a light on things best kept hidden. Neither she nor Oliver knows that Rogue’s Hollow is already home to a suspect from a twenty-five-year-old murder case . . . and someone is taking cold aim at those Tess is sworn to protect.

Another great book by Janice Cantore.  Tess is on the verge of getting baptized when a fire sweeps through town.  Everything is put on hold until the fire is under control and clean up is under way.  In the midst of all this she is hiding a witness in a high profile case.  Gunmen are sent to take out the witness and anyone that gets in their way.  Tess and Oliver's relationship is tested when he questions why she has to take so many risks.  As the story comes to a head, lives are at stake.

This is not an edge of your seat suspense.  But it is a great mystery.  I highly recommend you read it.  This is the third book in the series.  It would be beneficial to read the first two books but not necessary.
