A Captured Heart by Jody Hedlum

This book takes place during the war of 1814 on Mackinac Island.  The story starts with Angelique and the rest of the island near starvation.  The British have taken over the island and the winter is very severe.  Angelique is on her way to take fish to a blind woman when she is confronted by one of the British soldiers.  She is rescued by Pierre who has been gone from the island for five years and a former childhood playmate.  Pierre doesn’t recognize her but requests that she doesn’t say anything about him being on the island.

Angelique lives with her stepfather.  He is a very strict person and demands she dresses in a very chaste fashion.  He is also demands she do her work and his too.  Later Pierre shows up on the island to visit his mother. She is the blind woman that Angelique was taking the fish to.  He finally realizes the woman he rescued is his childhood friend.  The more time they spend together the feelings they use to have for each other reemerge.  The only problem is that she is engaged to Pierre’s brother Jean.  Jean is away serving with the American army fighting the British.  Pierre is a spy for the American’s and if anyone on the island finds out, he will be dead.

This was labeled as a suspense novel.  I didn’t feel any suspense anywhere.  Actually I skimmed through some of it so I could finish the book.  The love story was ok.  I am giving this book 3 stars instead of 2 as I don’t usually read books that tend more towards romance than suspense.

I was given this book by the publisher for an honest review.  I was not compensated in anyway.
